The D&H Railroad

 Strangers in Hagerstown Md

After  their first retirement by the D&H  2 PA 's 17 & 19 were sent to GE for trade in material

while 16 & 18 went to Steam Tours to be used in excursion service

D&H PA1-16&18 were in Hagerstown for the steam tours

2102 fan trip from Baltimore to Hagerstown roundtrip.

Feb. 5-6 1972

Saturday Feb 5th was a cold and clear day

  WM-Reading and D&H  PA-1 16 & 18 power in the yard

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday had a little bit of rain in Baltimore and turned to snow at Hagerstown.

D&H PA's and Reading T-1 were going to double head the

trip, but engine problems scratched the 2 D&H units and these

2 WM FA units filled in.

A  decent substitute for the ailing D&H PA duo

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The only run-by on the 02-06-72 Balto-Hagerstown trip was in the Hanover ,Pa area.

Because we were running late a runby with the FA units never happened.

We arrived in Hagerstown late, but just in time for some snow

Only in Hagerstown

Unless their was a BL2 in the scrap line at GE Erie,Pa  plant in Feb'72, this was

the only place you could get this shot.....

The next time I ran into the D&H was August '75

The D&H at Colonie shop

This was when all you had to do was check in with the D&H police, make a $1.00 donation

to their coffee fund, sign a release, and you could go into Colonie shop area and photograph

anything and everything all day long.

---Things were a lot different in 1975---

Recently rebuilt by M-K,  PA-4 #19 was backing out of the Colonie shop complex.

This is beyond a doubt the best looking Locomotive ever built.

No E unit, F unit, P42, F40, deffinately nothing running today even comes close

to the PA units for looks.

 AUG. 1975 - Shark  Territory

Sharks on the EL

Trip down to Binghamton, NY turned up the 2 sharks working the Sayre Turn on EL tracks

D&H 1216/1205 duo  leads on the EL at Johnson City, NY

Sharks and Pigs on bridge crossing the Lehigh Valley tracks Aug '75

Sharks on the EL, highball to Sayre Pa

Arrival at Sayre,Pa. Since they used the EL they came into the yard from the west end

and the sharks had to run around their train

while LV supplied a GP38 to help pull the train into the yard

Before they can work their train they have to wait a LV freight to clear

A couple of double up moves are used to get the train into the Sayre yard

Sharks 1205 and 1216  are then  ready to return to Binghamton, NY

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Last shot in August 75 has U30C 710 leading freight to Scranton PA under

the Erie Railroads famous Starucca Viaduct

Next visit to the D&H was in May'76

A lot of changes with the Conrail startup and the D&H now reached Buffalo,NY- Harrisburg, Pa

Oak Island, NJ, eeven winding its way down through Maryland and Wash DC to reach

Potomac yard in Alexandria, Va its new southern end

New GP39-2 power was needed so bad they didnt  have time to apply the D&H sheild

on the nose. Or maybe EMD didnt have them in stock. D&H was never big on EMD products.

They only bought 3 EMD SD45 locomotives and swapped them to EL for 3 GE  U33C units.

All units were swapped back to original owners  after Conrail.

D&H Alco c628 and EMD gp39-2 in Binghamton NY May'76

Another sheildless EMD GP39-2 7615 arrives at Jefferson Jct  ready to take the EL mainline west to its destination

C628 602 leads another 628 plus a U30C up towards Belden Hill in May'76

Thats all for now check back for updates
